MIA Boss

So, my talk went alright, mostly due to the good vibes sent via the internet or by sour cream pound cake injestion (thank you schuyler, mike d, and my parents). I got a lot of questions and one bad comment at the end, where the jerk in the crowd told me that he didn't believe anything that I had just said. I told him he could have his opinion and put it elsewhere. SO now all that is left is my preliminary exam. No big deal.

BUT, in other news, my boss is gone FOR TWO WHOLE WEEKS! I got here at 930 today and I didn't need to explain myself. I am really looking forward to this time.

Chalky talky

I have a big talk coming up tomorrow, so send me some good vibes. I am going to need them since I am not allowed to wear my zombie t shirt.

Week 3 Day1

I got here at 9:30, BUT I know that I read a lot of papers last night (I have a witness). I am going to keep that under my hat as to bring this fact to later to impress him with my knowledge. I can't believe he hasn't cracked yet. I am beginning to worry.

Week 2 Day 5

Hmmm. I got here at 1030. I told him I overslept.

Week 2 Day 3

I got here on time. No meeting, but I can tell he is happy to see my enthusiastic smile. 5:55 is a good album. Check it out.

Week 2 Day 2

I got here at 9:30! There were no consequences. In other news, I finished out the Kings of Convenience album I thought I had (riot on an empty street). It is good. Especially the track "Love is No Big Truth". I also got Charlotte Gainsburg, 5:55. I will let you know how that is as I haven't gotten there yet.

Week 2 Day 1

Got here at 9:05 and he was already in his office all chipper and chastising me for not buying anything for my mom on mother's day (sorry mom, tell me what you want). I still don't have my intense excitement t shirt, but I am feeling it. I really hope to increase my research productivity today as compared to the weekend, when I came in here and watched two episodes of LOST (they were really good and totally worth the guilt). The anxiety of having to be at work at a certain time is causing me to have a bout of insomnia, which I hope will pass so I can achieve my goal.

Day 5

It is 8:43. I am 17 minutes early today. He is already here. He is toughing it out much longer than I thought he could. It worries me.

Thursday, May 8, 2008

Day 4

I got here at approximately 8:57 am. He was already here. I can keep doing this. We will fight this out grudge match style. He probably weighs 115lbs, so I think I have an advantage over him in that category, but he is scrappy.

I received this email from my boss on saturday. It was CC'd to the new post doc in our lab as well as my former boss who pays for me but is more a silent partner. I have cut out a bit and highlighted the important sections:

This mail requires your attention. I am very pleased with your success in
the ChIP experiments you have done so far.
I would also like to devote an hour every day for you to
prepare for this work and your talk. I propose 9-10 for our meeting.
Starting this week, [post doc], you and I will be meeting every Wednesday
at NOON regularly for our lab meeting and Journal Club. We have a lot to
learn on liver/hepatocyte biology, transcription, stem cells and embryonic
development. I am working on setting up our conference with [silent partner].
In addition, we will plan on scheduling a FRIDAY NOON ONCE A MONTH for a
joint lab meeting with [other lab] to discuss research of mutual interest.
We have a happy hour once a month that we must attend. You should
also try to go to student lunch with seminar speakers. These are your only
social obligations.
You should try to go to our Monday JC and Tuesday work-in-progress as
much as possible. Due to limited time available to you, your work should
take priority, and you should be mindful to increase your research
I am now beginning to make contacts and arrangements for the many new
reagents and tools you will need to pursue your project most vigorously. I
will be especially grateful for your enthusiastic efforts to make our lab a
better place to work.
As always, my door is open whenever you need me. Please be considerate
in finishing your graduate program assignments early and seeking my input
ahead of schedule. Please inform me ahead of time if you will be away.
Thank you,
Sincerely yours,

Here are the major points from this email:

> 9-10 meeting everyday. Tricky ploy to stop me from coming in so late. I blame Schuyler for it mainly. It is now day 3 of him actually being here at 9am. I (and others) really didn't think he had it in him to be in lab before 11 so many days in a row. I don't know much longer I can take this scheduled rigidity.

>He probably wrote this because I didn't do that much last week after I had two presentations and a poster, all due on the same day. This caused me to get a horrible cold. I came to work, but did some computer work instead. He said at the end of the week, I don't know what you are doing over there, but you'd better get to work. I responded, ok, and I walked out of his office.

> I am not allowed to go to any social functions. Social functions are the only thing that keeps me sane.

> I need to get a t shirt that says INTENSE EXCITEMENT. I plan to wear it to lab and wear a mask with a large smile on it.

>He likes to cc people that shouldn't be cc'd

Some randomness.

I got tagged by jobonga to write some random thoughts. This is easy for me as I am a queen of non sequitors.

1. I recently learned what a merkin was from the podcast You look nice today. This leads into the fact I like to look up random things on urban dictionary.

2. I am addicted to scones and tea from whole foods. I go in so often that I have my own tea stash behind the counter with my name on it.

3. I like to buy shirts from shirt.woot. I have over 20 and I have to force myself not to buy more. I think I am going to send in my own design about the dangers of muffin top poking. It's a cause a lot of women can get behind.

4. I like to wear white sunglasses and flowery coats. I like being seen. And I am, From very far away.

5. Sometimes I stay longer at work because I really like my computer.

6. I have a cold and it has caused one of my lymph nodes to swell to the size of an edamame. I think it is fascinating and I palpate it often.
