department of eagles.

Another sort of weird video, but department of eagles, just like grizzly bear is so good.

I know it has been a long time since I posted anything. That is mostly because I don't feel like I have much to say that could possibly be funny or informative, there is so much of that out there on the internet. But, since these are supposed to be rants I guess I will start adding in my two cents more regularly. That being said, I decided to start taking a multivitamin as part of my daily routine. I thought I might be missing a little something and the rest of the pill I will just pee out anyway so no harm done. Vitamin D deficiency is the sexy new internal medicine topic, so why shouldn't I try to raise all of my vitamins? I am young and fairly fit. GO PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE. So I started taking them this week, beginning with some old one a days that I had in the medicine cabinet.  I realized why I don't like taking vitamins: they taste horrible. The pills are huge and no coating makes the fiber/vomit taste diminish. I also want to take the time to give you some hard earned advice: NEVER take them on an empty stomach. I did it the other day and I literally almost threw up at the coffee area in whole foods. horrible! Does anyone take a vitamin that tastes delicious? I know some grad school friends that take the gummy ones, but I think I would feel silly taking those. I need suggestions.

48 dollar challenge: day 7

Today is a sad day my friends. I am going to fail my challenge as my car decided to act up last night and stall for no apparent reason. It started back up and no lights are on, but I don't want it happening again when I am on my own next week. It is in the shop while I am sitting in panera, riding my hot chocolate purchase at least another hour while I wait for them to get to my car. So, from my wallet I spent approximately 3 dollars, but who knows how much is damage is going to be on the car. Unforseen situations were at work here, ruining my awesome no money spending streak!  A week is pretty good though, and the car is not a frivelous thing. In this time waiting I have found all of these other things I want, including: swedish hasbeens and a dress form. Can't you just see those green ankle boots on my feet? I already have the magenta tights! I have already told my mother I want them for my birthday. I am willing to wait until december if it means I don't have to pay. well, maybe.

48 dollar challenge day 6

OK. update. I have successfully spent NO money thus far. I was going to spend some money last night to tip the bartenders at the wedding we went to (congrats to Doug and Molly), but I forgot. Ha! I didn't have to pay a copay at the dentist, so I am all set with money and I have clean teeth!

48 dollar challenge: day 2

I have spent 0 dollars today!!! BUT, I have to go to the dentist tomorrow, so that is a co-pay. I will keep you posted. My mom sent me some great ideas about cheap food options:

Summer on a stick: Get creative with kid-friendly and affordable ice pops
By Susan M. Selasky

Gonzo Gourmet • Reincarnate leftovers for a sauce, drink or hash.

I might make summer on a stick... I will take pics.

48 dollar challenge.

If you know me you know I have a problem with shopping and spending my money. After paying rent yesterday I realized I will only have 48 dollars in my bank account until payday, which is next Thursday. I am going to try to make it with only this money for the rest of the time. I started this challenge yesterday. Do you think I can make it? Schuyler is going to be gone all of next week, so what should I do for free fun?

Tuesday: spent no money, but drove to climbing (30 minutes each way)
I will post my money spent today later tonight.

another PURSE.

I know. I know. I should be writing my thesis. I am. I just wrote a sentence like 5 minutes ago, so there is totally progress going on in the background of my procrastination. I made a larger version of the purse for Rylan, but this one is for Kristin, who just finished all of the schooling she will ever have to do. EVER. pretty exciting.

So this is the purse. I really like this Art deco style fabric, but it wasn't too easy to match it with any of the fabrics that I had lying around, so I took a chance and went with some nice aqua for the top panel. I think it looks good, although a little daring and mismatchy.
here is a little close up, complete with my head poking through! These bags are fun little projects, so its alright that I have two more to go.

Another one

This one is for my old neighbor Rylan. she and her husband moved too far away, so I must send her a craft. This is from an Amy Butler pattern. I have two more of these to make, but they are going to be bigger. It was a fair amount of work, but I think it looks great, so it was worth it.
I used the same fabric I used for a previous little purse, but changed up the colors a bit. This time there is orange, which I thought was exciting. Its all about the little things.

The lining is blue with red pockets on both sides and a magnetic snap to boot.

birthday purse.

Ok. So, I made another one, this time for a birthday present. I like making purses, but this one was a total pain. Those pleats: super hard. I liked the last pattern better, but a bigger clutch is what Claire wanted, so a bigger clutch Claire got.

I just hope she likes polka dots!

um, crazy.

this is why people shouldn't mountain bike. It is dangerous. Scars aren't THAT sexy.

she is having a rough day at work.

Lily is bearing the brunt of my thesis writing procrastination, as the wearing of the cat tie might suggest.

Craft 8: purse

Last night I put together a new craft. I got the pattern from made by rae, a fun craft blog. She put this pattern up free for personal use, so I thought I would try it out. I used fabric from the anna marie horner collection, which I just bought a yard pack of, so I got a bunch of different colors. For a bargain, obviously I couldn't pass it up. I put some interfacing in between the lining and the outside of the bag which gave it some good weight.
This is the purse outer. I liked the look of the red with the brown. I think I am going to add a button flap to secure the purse a bit better. The pattern called for a magnetic snap, but I didn't have any, so I just went with it to see how it would look. The purse is definitely not perfect, I still have some things I need to work on. At this point I am more of a messy sewer.

I used blue for the lining, gives it some POP.

Here it is where you can see the strap. I don't know that I would put the strap on the next one, I think it would be a super cute clutch. There are a lot of possibilities for awesomeness with this bag, so if you are a crafter, go check out the blog and get the pattern!

tim burton at moma.

I was just watching the nightmare before christmas the other day and what should appear a few days later? articles about Tim Burton's art exhibit at the MOMA. Here is one of his illustrations. The whole exhibit sounds pretty interesting. Check it out: here is a link to an article in the guardian. Here is the blurb from the MOMA.

Animal Collective: summertime clothes

Why do indie bands always make such weird videos? I only watched the first 30 seconds, but the only thing I could think of fitting into the name of the song were the beach balls. Whitney, I am expecting a full analysis.

new grizzly bear video.

This is from the new grizzly bear album. One of them has such a nice voice you might think he was altered as a child, hitting those high notes and such. The album is awesome, you should pick it up.

Two of the band members were on all things considered. Here is the interview.

from a band I like.

The band's name is vulgar to those with sensitive ears, but I didn't name them. I just like them.

cool little article about epidemics and pandemics and the scapegoats blamed.

Just a cool little graphic about epidemics and pandemics and the scapegoats that were blamed.

We (meaning viv, mike d., shaun, and occasionally kevin, schuyler, and myself) like to play the game Pandemic. It is a pretty awesome game with 4 simultaneous outbreaks of different organisms and your job is to stamp them out. Every player gets a different job with different strengths. You must work cooperatively, which is hard for me because I think I know best.
Now its happening in real life. H1N1 !!! pigs!!!! Perhaps we should use our virus hunting and killing skillz to erradicate. Now is the time to buy pork, I just have to get schuyler to eat some ribs.

Leslie and the Lys

Tuesday night was a momentous occasion. Leslie Hall and her lovely Ly's were playing at the dark lady in Providence RI. I had first seen Leslie Hall in Madison WI with jobonga and the cheese rind. If you don't know about her, she is a larger than life lady rapper from Ames, IA. Sabrina Blaze, pictured below, was MC-ing the event, which was leslie plus karoke. Since it was St. Patrick's Day, Sabrina was dressed in a tight green sequin dress. She stands at about 6'5", so she is hard to miss.

Leslie came on around 11:15, with the Ly's in outfits complete with White Tiger heads, pictured on the below. The stage was very small, but she managed to put on quite a show. She brought up some gem sweaters, one of which was a christmas theme. There was an outcry from a show goer that didn't think this was an acceptable gem sweater. Leslie dealt with it in stride and thanked the pink haired woman for her vigilance.

Leslie and the Ly's tried out some new songs, one of which was titled: Craft Talk. I have embedded the video below. She giggled a bit as she said they were still working on the stage performance. She did her scissor kicks and her lady flips while on stage and had a great merchandise table, where we cleaned up! Schuyler is the proud owner of a SHAZAM! I am glamorous t shirt.

all in all the show was great although it was too short! I wanted more leslie. Her first set ended at midnight. Sabrina told us that she would be out later, but we didn't want to wait through a lot of drunken karoke.

As we left, we took pictures of the Gem-tastic Razzle Dazzle Van, which they use to spread their message of crafting and gem sweater preservation around the US.

Yesterday, I started to look on the interwebs for awesome leslie links, and I wanted to share them with you:
  1. Ramona Muse, aka Mona Bonez has her own website, full of crafting and her other art forms. She also has a blogspot blog, although she hasn't posted for awhile.
  2. Holla Back Ames, a radio show that features Leslie Hall, soon to be podcasted. I will keep you posted.
  3. Major Leslie Page, complete with a lot of links: the store, to the tour dates, her college art, etc. Spend some time here, especially the titanic club. Read this, you won't be disappointed.
  4. here is Leslie's more professional art portfolio, from college and beyond.
  5. If you search flickr, you can get some sweet photos.
  6. She was a guest celebrity on Etsy, she made some sweet picks of crafts.
  7. She also has myspace and a facebook, but those are easy.
Check her out when she comes into town. It is an experience.

T shirt Tuesday 17: Robot City

Craft 7: Yoga Tote.

Ling Ling just graduated from her PhD. When someone graduates, we always like to have a little party, give some gifts. I made her a tote bag for her yoga stuff. I have Irene modeling the tote here, she is looking very stylish.

The straps on the side have velcro on them to allow for a mat to go on to the side of the bag.
I think the bag actually turned out really nicely. Ling Ling will be able to relax her body with increased style.

Craft 6: Tiny Tote

I didn't realize it would be so small when I first set out to make it. You can't really put the strap on your shoulder comfortably, but it would be great when only slightly scaled up. The inside is a pretty sturdy black canvas and the outer fabric is also a canvas, so there was no need for a interfacing layer, which created less hassle.

I also made this little wallet to go along with it. The book called for an invisible snap, but I just used velcro, as I am a quick and dirty seamstress at the moment.
here is what the inside looks like:
those pockets actually fit credit cards, so I was pretty proud of myself.

Craft 5: Beta testing of pouch construction

so I tried to make a pouch like a sandwich bag that folds over itself, but that failed miserably. I had to adapt and make this pouch with a velcro closure instead. I think it turned out alright. It was more a beta test for the next time. I like the color combos, which is the same as the placemats/coasters and I think I am getting better at actually sewing in a straight line, which is real progress.

do they not look at their models?

LAZY EYE?! wha?!?
click on it. Don't they check their models? How do they let this happen? Do you not notice she can't look in one direction? lazy eyes are quite distracting. If you are going to have a model with a lazy, at least don't accentuate it. Come on.

Craft Time: Placemats

After I made the coasters, I decided to make even larger rectangles for my house: placemats. They are mix and match, reversible, washable and wonderful.

SET 1:

SET 2:

just 4 more to go. and napkins. and a table runner. I will be busy.

T shirt Tuesday 16: Breakfast Squad

oh man. Matching t shirts. We are totally lame. This is Schuyler's first appearance on T shirt tuesday. He tried to look excited, but it was obviously faked. He is more interested in his huge computer and his huge DVD collection. In my picture, I am wearing my tired of work face and my work hoodie. I actually silk screen printed these with the talented mike d It is his design and I have been eyeing it for quite some time. I am very happy with results and now I just have to stop schuyler from wearing the same shirt as me.

Craft 4: coasters

Vivienne and I made awesome coasters as a house warming for Irene. We made more for ourselves because once you start making cute stuff you just can't stop.

We added bias tape with some cool polka dots on there and then used another fabric on the back.

We made another style as well, for a mix and match feel:

They also actually work for the designed purpose which is always nice.

sweater thursday.

My lovely mother got me this nice argyle number for christmas this year. I like the boat neck. Today I am sitting in lab trying to come up with something productive to do. This may prove difficult.

JOanna is a crafty lady.

Joanna is a nice lady. She recently made me this lovely coffee cozy in return for a tissue holder that I had fashioned out of felt.
I put it on my lovely travel tea mug (thank you Irene) and I am now ready to grab onto it with my tiny baby starfish hands.

Can pirates raid their own bootys?

I found this delightful little fellow at my parent's house and I noticed his booty. I was sort of curious why they would bother with the booty detail and was thinking they wanted him to have his own treasure, thus the booty. His parrott is also detachable. You are probably wanting to get your hands on his booty, so here.
